Mom: I have to take your sister out, but the tree cutting guys are coming over. You'll have to let them in and they don't speak English, but they should know what to do.
Me: Okay.

SCENE TWO

[The tree cutting guys arrive.]

Me: Hola, mi madre no está aquí, pero ella dice que Uds. saben que necesitan hacer.
Them: We need you to open the garage.
Me: ... oh, okay.

IT HAPPENS EVERYWHERE. When we were traveling around Europe, everyone spoke English, and in a lot of the French speaking countries, they'd cut my French-student travel companion off and start speaking to her in English.

My favorite was the street crepe vendors in Paris. The two guys working the booth spoke a language I didn't recognize to each other, but as soon as this girl finished ordering in French, they started talking to us in perfect American-accented English about where we were from. orz.
